Curriculum  »  Physical Education (PE)

Physical Education is an essential component of our school curriculum and it is our intention that students are encouraged to maintain healthy, active lives. PE helps to support physical and mental health/well-being and embeds values such as fairness and respect. PE provides our pupils with an opportunity to be creative, competitive and face challenges as individuals or as a team. It provides situations to allow pupils to think in a different way and make decisions in response. 


Our PE curriculum aims to develop our pupils’ physical competence in a broad range of different activities, giving pupils the confidence and opportunity to engage in competitive sports/activities and inspire them to succeed and excel in physically demanding activities. It also allows for social responsibility as they take on different roles including leadership, coaching and officiating. 


Through high quality PE our pupils discover their aptitudes, abilities and preferences to make informed choices about how they will get involved with lifelong physical activity. In a safe yet challenging programme of activities, we aim to support children to become confident individuals, successful learners, independent and responsible young people. 


By the end of each key stage, pupils know and understand how to apply the skills and processes learnt in the following sporting areas: 

  • Invasion Games
  • Net and Racket
  • Striking and Fielding Games
  • Aesthetic activities
  • Athletic activities
  • Outdoor and Adventurous activities 
  • Swimming

Activities build on prior learning and give children of all abilities the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding. We plan a progressive pathway so there is an increasing challenge as children move through the school.  


In EYFS, pupils build foundations and confidence in a range of movements, safely and effectively. They focus on object and body control, agility, movement skills and multi skills: 

  • to move freely in a range of ways such as skipping, hopping, walking
  • to climb equipment using alternate feet
  • to balance
  • to catch, throw and kick a ball 
  • to jump with control and coordination

In KS1, pupils master basic movements and skills and apply these in a broad range of different activities. This includes both competitive and cooperative activities. Pupils are taught to: 

  • master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and coordination
  • participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
  • perform dances/sequences using simple movement patterns.

In KS2 pupils continue to develop and build on their repertoire of skills and use them in both individual and team situations. Pupils:

  • use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
  • play competitive games and apply basic principles for attacking and defending 
  • develop flexibility, strength, technique and control
  • perform dances using a range of movement patterns
  • take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
  • compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

Through a broad range of activities, our PE provision develops our pupils’ competence and confidence, so it becomes a central part of their lives, both in an out of school. It enables all pupils to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activities and skills such as body management, teamwork, sportsmanship, and cooperation. We promote physical fitness in a fun and engaging way.  


We have developed a culture where children have a positive attitude towards PE and sport. The impact has been the number of pupils taking part in PE and extracurricular activities and representation for school, town and county. Our well-developed PE provision beyond the curriculum extends and enriches our offer. It includes:

  • A vast extra-curricular programme including competitive situations, inter and intra competitions and work to feed into external clubs
  • Work with our Occupational Therapist to develop provision for our SEND pupils 
  • Take part in external initiatives to encourage being active out of school
  • Active break and lunchtimes including the Daily Mile
  • Established partnerships with sporting organisations. 

We encourage the children to achieve their best in line with one of our key values ‘be the best you can be’.
